A Tradition of Engineers in the Lentz Family |

Civil engineer Bernhard Hugo Lentz |
Hugo Lentz
(1828 in Hamburg/Germany - 1903 in Hamburg)
He was the first engineer known in the Lentz family, working more than 40 years as a civil engineer for harbour construction in Hamburg and Cuxhaven (at the mouth of the Elbe river). Hugo Lentz was holder of a patent for a "time ball", signalling the time to the ships in the river. His many merits - for instance the first precise calculations of low tides and high tides between Hamburg and Cuxhaven, or the construction of the New Harbour, were credited in 1970 by naming an ice breaker / tug boat for him. This boat is on duty today in the harbour of Hamburg and on the lower Elbe.

Claus Lentz
(1906 in Hamburg - 1998 in Erlangen)
Claus, one of many grand-sons of Hugo Lentz, was Dipl.-Ing. EE and second generation of engineers in this family. He worked for Philips/Valvo (vacuum tubes production), TeKaDe (early semiconductor rectifiers) and SIEMENS (rectifiers, thyristors for motor power control in machinery, esp. electrical trains). He holds several patents in this field.
Claus Lentz was active in collecting and editing material for this family chronicle up to his last days, which work is being continued by Eberhard Lentz, his younger son. He was very proud of his grand-sons Andreas and Michael, who introduced him to the Internet and to produced our homepage. |
